BRIEF HISTORY
The Catholic Charismatic Renewal (CCR) came to Makurdi diocese in the early 80’s with Br Celestine Chukwukezie (of blessed memory) as a pioneer founder, who introduced the CCRN at St. John’s parish Gboko – a group known today as Victory prayer group Gboko. From there the movement spread to Zaki-Biam with a prayer group known today as Christ Ambasssador; Christ the True Vine, Lafia (now in Lafia diocese); and Christ the Light St. Mary’s North Bank Makurdi. The CCRN in the diocese was formally inaugurated in the diocese on 13th February 1989 by His Lordship Rt. Rev. Dr. Donald Murray (of blessed memory) the then bishop of Makurdi diocese.
The first meeting of the Diocesan Council (now the Diocesan Service Team, DST) took place in july 1985 at St. John’s primary School Gboko. During the meeting Br Samuel Azzah was elected as the 1st diocesan chairman with Br Alphonsus Ozoemena (now a Rev. Fr) as the first secretary.

Currently the diocese has five deaneries – Makurdi, Taraku, Gboko, Katsina-Ala, and Adikpo. There are about twenty-four (24) registered prayer groups in the diocese.
